The word sophrology is based on greek words [sos]: harmony;[phren]:consciousness;[logos]:study or science. It is the study of the consciousness in harmony. The method was created in the 60’s by the neuropsychiatrist Alfonso Caycedo, who devised a practice combining different tools such as relaxation, breathing, yoga, hypnotherapy, phenomenology, Japanese zen etc.. to achieve harmony of both body and mind.  It is a discipline to help people change the way their minds and bodies react to what are for them highly stressful situations, and live a more peaceful existence. It reinforces the whole person and makes us more able to resist life’s hardships with greater serenity.

MAIN PRINCIPLES:

  • Positive action. We always try to focus on positive elements inside us and in our past, present, and future that will empower us to move forward, to strengthen and reinforce the self, to reach our full potential and find solutions to our problems. Every positive action on the consciousness reflects on the body, soul and mind.
  •  Body awareness (not only our body parts but our cells, organs…). Different exercises help us to explore our inner self, body, mind and spirit to know ourselves better, to be more at ease with ourselves, to accept ourselves the way we are.
  • Objective reality and to free ourselves of prejudice. We look at things with a neutral look (“as if for the first time”), listening to sensations with no judgements, no ready-made ideas or expectations.
  • Adaptability, the sophrologist must tailor techniques to the client to be as efficient as possible. We are all different and need the time we need to look for our inner self.

“Through our eyes, the universe is perceiving itself. Through our ears, the universe is listening to its harmonies. We are the witnesses through which the universe becomes conscious of its glory, of its magnificence.”
